South Carolina, with all typical attributes of the Southern States, is situated at the east coast between Washington and Florida. Charleston, directly located at the Atlantic Sea, is one of the oldest European settlements in America, founded in 1670 and named after the English King Charles II. In former times an important place for the slave trade, the town has been nearly destroyed in 1886 with an earthquake. Today Charleston is a singular architecture jewel with many buildings from the 19th century. The Secession War started at the Fort Surnter in Charleston on April 12, 1861.
