The city of Luxembourg is mainly known as one of the three official capitals of the European Community, but it is an astonishing thousand year old fortress town too. Started with the castle of the count Sigefroi in 963, developed in the following centuries a powerful and most important fortress. This is why the town is also called the "Gibraltar of the North".

After the destruction of the largest part of the fortresses in accordance with the London conference in 1867, only 10% of all of the buildings are visible. One could not destroy the casemates without exposing a part of the town to the danger of collapse. One could reopened 17 km of them in 1933. They are an important component of the other fortresses and have great historical value. These corridors built in the rocks can be visited and are part of the attraction of the town and listed in the UNESCO world cultural heritage in 1994.

In this city history and modernity live together perfectly and a various culture plays an important role. The city of Luxembourg organizes a large summer festival "Summer in the city". This event lasts for two and a half months and unites a large number of musical events. This starts with the music celebration "Fête de la Musique" on June, 21^st and ends at the middle of September with the "Marathon of brass music" at the Place d’Armes (weapon place) in the centre of the city. This place is also starting point of the parade, which leads marching bands through the old part of town.

But the smallest state of the European community doesn't only consist of the capital. The city Grevenmacher on the bank of the river Mosel celebrates its wine and grape event every year. There is the possibility for further concerts and the participation in the fanfares parade at this event, which is nearly 60 years old.
